Workers of the World: International Journal on Strikes and Social Conflict aims to stimulate global studies on labor and social conflicts in an interdisciplinary, global, long term historical and non-Eurocentric perspective. It intends to move away from traditional forms of methodological nationalism and conjectural studies, adopting an explicitly critical and interdisciplinary perspective. Therefore, it will publish empirical research and theoretical discussions that address strikes and social conflicts in an innovative and rigorous manner. It will also promote dialogue between scholars from different fields and different countries and disseminate analyzes on different sociocultural realities, to give visibility and centrality to this theme.

Workers of the World – International Journal on Strikes and Social Conflict (WW) és una revista acadèmica sota l’arbitri d’un consell científic publicada en llengua anglesa, a la que a poden ser sotmesos textos originals en espanyol, francès, anglès, italià i portuguès. Workers of the World publica articles originals, entrevistes i recensions/ressenyes de llibres de l’àrea de la història del treball i dels conflictes socials des d’una perspectiva multidisciplinar, global, no eurocèntrica i de llarga duració
Tots els textos són sotmesos a dos avaluadors anònims, un cop assegurat l’acompliment dels requisits mínims apuntats en les normes de presentació de col·laboracions. El Consell Editorial es reserva el dret de no iniciar el procés d’avaluació dels articles que no atenguin a aquests resquisits mínims apuntats en les normes de presentació de col·laboracions. Així mateix, també es reserva la decisió referent a l’oportunitat de la publicació de les contribucions rebudes.
Les recensions/ressenyes de llibres són benvingudes i hauran de seguir les especificacions que s’indiquen seguidament.
Normes per la presentació de col·laboracions:
1- Tots els treballs han de ser presentats per via electrònica al nostre e-mail ( workersoftheworld2012@yahoo.co.uk). El programa utilitzat ha de ser compatible amb el Word de Windows i les imatges han d’estar en resolució de 300 pixels.
2- Alhora s’han d’adjuntar les dades completes de l’autor/autora (mom complert, grup/institució al que pertany, titulació acadèmica, adreça institucional i e-mail de contacte). L’autor ha de declarar també que el text aportat és inèdit i que no ha estat publicat, o en procés d’avaluació, en cap altra publicació.
3- Els originals poden ser presentats en espanyol, francès, anglès, italià i portuguès. Però l’article en la seva forma definitiva serà publicat en anglès. En aquest sentit, l’autor haurà de responsabilitzar-se en el termini de dos mesos des de l’acceptació de l’article de la seva traducció.
4- Les traduccions hauran d’anar acompanyades de l’autorització de l’autor i de l’original del text.
5- Els articles tindran una extensió de entre 25.000 i 40.000 caràcters amb espais inclosos, utilitzaran Times New Roman, cos 12, amb un interlineat d’1,5. Les cites de més de tres línies s’hauran de separar del cos del text i fer-se amb font 11 i interlineat senzill. Els marges superiors i inferiors del text seran de 2 cm i els laterals de 3 cm. Els articles seran acompanyats del títol en anglès i un absrtact amb un màxim de 10 línies (en la llengua original i en anglès), amb 3-5 paraules claus.
6- Las recensions/ressenyes podran tenir entre 5000 i 7500 caràcters (inclosos els espais), amb 3 paraules claus, a més del títol en la llengua original i en anglès. Les fonts i la bibliografia seguiran les mateixes normes dels articles, no depassant mai les dues pagines.
7- Les notes han de ser col·locades a peu de pàgina i no han de superar la trentena.

Workers of the World – International Journal on Strikes and Social Conflict (WW) es una revista académica bajo el arbitrio de un consejo científico, publicada en lengua inglesa, a la que a pueden ser sometidos trabajos originales en español, francés, inglés, italiano y portugués. Workers of the World publica artículos originales, entrevistas y recensiones/reseñas de libros del campo de la historia del trabajo y de los conflictos sociales desde una perspectiva multidisciplinar, global, no eurocéntrica y de larga duración.
Todos los textos son sometidos a dos evaluadores anónimos, una vez asegurado el cumplimiento de los requisitos mínimo apuntados en las normas de presentación de colaboraciones. El Consejo Editorial se reserva el derecho de no iniciar el proceso de evaluación de le los artículos que no atiendan a los requisitos mínimos apuntados en las normas de presentación de colaboraciones. Así mismo, también se reserva la decisión referente a la oportunidad de la publicación de las contribuciones recibidas.
Les recensiones/reseñas de libros son bienvenidas y tendrán que seguir las especificaciones que se indican seguidamente.
Normes para la presentación de colaboraciones:
1- Todos los trabajos han de ser presentados por vía electrónica a nuestro e-mail ( workersoftheworld2012@yahoo.co.uk). El programa utilizado debe ser compatible con el Word de Windows y las imágenes han de estar en una resolución de 300 pixels.
2- A su vez se deben adjuntar los datos completos del autor/autora (nombre completo, grupo/institución a la que se pertenece, titulación académica, dirección institucional y e-mail de contacto). El autor/autora debe declarar también que el texto aportado es inédito y que no ha sido publicado, o se encuentra en proceso de evaluación, en ninguna otra publicación.
3- Los originales pueden ser presentados en español, francés, inglés, italiano y portugués, pero el artículo en su forma definitiva será publicado en inglés. En este sentido, el autor tendrá que responsabilizarse de su traducción en el plazo de dos meses después la aceptación del artículo.
4- Las traducciones deberán acompañarse de la autorización del autor para su publicación y del original del texto.
5- Los artículos tendrán una extensión de entre 25.000 y 40.000 caracteres con espacios, utilizarán Times New Roman cuerpo 12, con un interlineado de 1,5. Las citas de más de tres líneas se deberán separar del cuerpo del texto y realizar con fuente 11 e interlineado sencillo. Los márgenes superiores e inferiores del texto serán de 2 cm y los laterales de 3 cm. Los artículos serán acompañados del título en inglés y un abstract de no más de 10 líneas (en la lengua original y en inglés), con de 3-5 palabras claves.
6- Las recensiones/reseñas deberán ser de entre 5000 y 7500 caracteres con espacios, con tres palabras claves, además del título en la lengua original y en inglés. Las fuentes y la bibliografía seguirán las mismas normas de los artículos, no superando nunca dos paginas.
7- Las notas deben ser colocadas a pie de página y no han de superar la treintena.

Editorial statement
The first issue of Workers of the World. International Journal on Strikes and Social Conflict is now online since the end of June 2012. The journal is an important step to consolidate the initiative, decided on at the Lisbon Labour Conference in March 2011, of creating an international association of researchers and institutions involved in the study of this subject.
The working class repeatedly continues to make its presence known and by doing so refutes the pessimistic predictions about the end of social conflicts that were popular in past decades. Different forms of popular struggle emerged in response to deteriorating living conditions, precarious employment of labour, and the change or elimination of social and labour protection legislation. In addition to the renewed labour movement in its classical forms of collective action and organization through strikes and unions, we saw the emergence or re-creation of movements of the unemployed or underemployed, of the landless and the homeless, just to mention some of the most widely known.
Despite numerous attempts to theoretically declare the end of social classes, strikes, and social movements, the inherent social contradictions in society and workers’ own actions constitute imposing evidence to the contrary. Industrial conflicts repeatedly have intersected with other social conflicts and ethnic, gender and generational issues complexity and renew interest in collective action, bringing in new theoretical and analytical challenges to researchers.

Workers of the World – International Journal on Strikes and Social Conflict (WW) é uma revista académica com arbitragem científica publicada em língua inglesa, para a qual podem ser submetidos manuscritos originais em espanhol, francês, inglês, italiano e português. Workers of the World publica artigos originais, entrevistas e recensões/resenhas de livros na área da história do trabalho e dos conflitos sociais numa perspectiva interdisciplinar, global, não eurocêntrica e de longa duração.
Todos os textos são submetidos a dois avaliadores/pareceristas (sob anonimato), desde que atendam aos requisitos mínimos apontados nas normas de apresentação de colaborações. O Conselho Editorial reserva-se o direito de não dar início ao processo de avaliação de artigos que não atendam às exigências previstas nas normas para a apresentação de colaborações.
Cabe ao Conselho Editorial a decisão referente à oportunidade da publicação das contribuições recebidas.

Normas para a apresentação de colaborações
As colaborações para a revista Workers of the World – International Journal on Strikes and Social Conflict devem seguir as seguintes normas:
- Todos os trabalhos devem ser apresentados por via electrónica para o nosso e-mail (workersoftheworld2012@yahoo.co.uk). O programa utilizado deve ser compatível com o Word for Windows. Imagens em 300 dpi.
- Separadamente, devem ser enviados os dados completos do autor (nome completo, filiação institucional, títulos académicos, endereço institucional e e-mail para correspondência). O autor deve também declarar que o texto submetido é inédito e não se encontra publicado ou em processo de avaliação em nenhuma outra publicação.
- Os originais podem ser submetidos em espanhol, francês, inglês, italiano e português. Porém, o artigo na sua forma definitiva será publicado em inglês, pelo que – uma vez aprovado para publicação – o autor deverá responsabilizar-se, no prazo de dois meses a contar da aceitação do artigo, pela respectiva tradução.
- As traduções devem vir acompanhadas de autorização do autor e do original do texto.
- Os artigos terão a extensão de 25 mil a 40 mil caracteres (incluindo espaços), digitados em fonte Times New Roman, corpo 12, com espaçamento entre linhas de 1,5. As citações de mais de três linhas deverão ser feitas em destaque, com fonte 11, em espaço simples. Margens: superior e inferior: 2.0 cm; esquerda e direita: 3.0 cm. Os artigos serão acompanhados do título em inglês, resumo e abstract de no máximo 10 linhas (na língua original e em inglês), com 3 a 5 palavras-chave.
- As recensões/resenhas poderão ter entre 5000 e 7500 caracteres (incluindo espaços), com 3 palavras-chave, além do título na língua original e inglês. As fontes e bibliografia seguem as mesmas normas dos artigos, não devendo ultrapassar mais que duas páginas.
- As notas devem ser colocadas em rodapé, não ultrapassando o número de 30.

Editorial and publishing rules – English
Workers of the World – International Journal on Strikes and Social Conflict (WW) is an academic journal with peer review published in English, for which original manuscripts may be submitted in Spanish, French, English, Italian and Portuguese. Workers of the World publishes original articles, interviews and book reviews in the field of labour history and social conflicts in an interdisciplinary, global, long term historical and non Eurocentric perspective.
All texts are anonymously submitted to two referees, provided they meet the minimum requirements indicated in the rules for submission of contributions. The Editorial Board reserves the right not to initiate the review process of articles that do not meet these editorial and publishing rules for submission.
The Editorial Board takes the decisions regarding the timing of publication of received contributions.
Book reviews are welcome provided they follow the specifications below.
Rules for submission of contributions
All submissions to the journal Workers of the World – International Journal on Strikes and Social Conflict must follow these rules:
- All entries must be electronically sent to our e-mail (workersoftheworld2012@yahoo.co.uk). They must be saved in a program that’s compatible with Word for Windows. Images at 300 dpi.
- Separately, authors must send their full details – full name, institutional affiliation, academic degrees, institutional address and e-mail for correspondence). The author must also declare that the submitted text is original and not yet published or being evaluated in any other publication.
- The originals may be submitted in Spanish, French, English, Italian and Portuguese. However, the article in its final form will be published in English, so – once approved for publication – the author is responsible for its translation within two months.
- The translations must be accompanied by a permission of the author and the original text.
- The articles will have a length of 25 000 to 40 000 characters (including spaces), typed in Times New Roman, size 12, with 1.5 line spacing. Quotations of more than three lines should be highlighted with font 11, single spaced. Margins: top and bottom: 2.0 cm, left and right: 3.0 cm. Items will be accompanied by the English title, abstract of no more than 10 lines (in original language and English), with 3-5 keywords.
- Book reviews may be between 5000 and 7500 characters (including spaces), with three key words, besides the title in the original language and English. Sources and bibliography follow the same rules of the articles and should not exceed two pages.
- The notes should be placed in footnotes, not exceeding the number of 30.

Call for articles: workers’ protests in the Middle East
Submission deadline: 1 February 2015
The eruption of mass protests in the Middle East has revived the interest in the study of social and political conflicts in the region. This is a welcome development that challenges essentialist and top down approaches, and focuses our attention on the social forces that through myriad forms of resistance have shaped and are shaping the social fabric and the political landscape of the Middle East. This trend is reflected in a growing number of publications that deal with power and conflict.
This issue of Workers of the World, the online journal of the International Association Strikes and Social Conflict, aims to contribute to this development by drawing attention to the struggles of formal and informal workers in both their workplaces and communities. Therefore, we’ll devote a dossier to the historical and present role of “workers’ protests in the Middle East” (1945 – present) to be published on 1 July 2015.
The editors welcome all contributions on workers’ protests in the Middle East, but especially those that deal with one or more of the following aspects:
– Critical discussion of the approaches to the study of workers’ protests in the Middle East;
– The role of workers in the recent revolutions and counter-revolutions in the Middle East;
– Case studies of strikes and other forms of workers’ struggles in a particular location (workplace/community);
– The challenges and possibilities of collective action among workers in the informal sector;
– The relationship between workplace and community struggles;
– The interaction of class, gender and ethnicity in the shaping of workers’ struggles;
– The interaction between workers’ protests and social movements.
– The relationship between ideological, cultural and material factors in the emergence of workers’ protests.

Papers for this Middle East dossier of the journal should be sent to the guest editor Peyman Jafari: p.jafari@uva.nl with a CC to workersoftheworld2012@yahoo.co.uk.
Articles can be submitted in English, French, Spanish, Portuguese or Italian. All selected works will be published in English, and the authors will be responsible for translation within two months following approval for publication.
The final version in English should not exceed 5,000 words (including notes and spaces) and should be submitted in Times New Roman 12 font with 1.5 line spacing. For questions regarding format and publishing, see:
After submission, the editors of the journal will select the articles on the basis of their originality and quality, and notify the authors within 6 weeks. The selected articles will be peer reviewed and authors will have enough time (8 weeks) to hand in a final version after receiving comments from the reviewers.
